Apart from meat and seafood dishes, Greek restaurants in Malta offer vegetarian meals as well.

Greek cuisine

Greek cuisine falls into the Mediterranean style which means it's based on olive oil, bread (pita) and wine, although finishing the list here would be highly unfair. Greeks love to eat and because of that, they care deeply about their food. Many tourists visiting this perfect holiday destination fall in love not only with the view but the cuisine as well. After all, Greece has a lot to offer. Starting with the cheese, everyone knows feta, loved especially as an addition to salads. Not to forget about Halloumi, originated from Cyprus but produced in Greece as well. The most recognisable dishes are moussaka, souvlaki, gyros and tzatziki. Moussaka can be based on potatoes or aubergine, layered with tomatoes, minced meat and covered with bechamel sauce. Souvlaki is a small, grilled pieces of meat (lamb, pork, beef, chicken or fish) and sometimes vegetables, served with pita bread. It is considered as kind of a fast food, as it's easy to prepare and eat on the way. A more dinner(ish) version can be served with grilled bread or potatoes on a plate. Gyros is a dish made of pork or chicken cooked on the vertical rotisserie and served with vegetables and tzatziki sauce usually in pita bread - as a fast food, or on a plate as a main course. Famous tzatziki is nothing more than yoghurt mixed with cucumber, garlic, salt, olive oil and herbs like mint and parsley. Can be served with meat or as a dip for veggies. Also, filo pastry is very popular in Greek cuisine, paper-thin sheets can serve as a wrapping for various stuffing such as meat, cheese and vegetables.

Apart from meat, Greeks love seafood and fish and you can expect to see a lot of them on the menu. Grilled prawns, calamari and octopus with various dips are definitely not to be missed. Especially Greek restaurants in Malta can offer a variety of fresh seafood and fish. Greek restaurants are good places to discover the spirit of a calm and relaxed lifestyle. You can enjoy your drink with a set of meze, small appetisers served to accompany wine and ouzo. They can be hot or cold, spicy or savoury, the diversity is really big. A very popular form of meze is hummus served with bread or veggies. And of course all kinds of grilled seafood.
